The basic aim of blackjack is to collect cards with points that total as close to 21 as possible without going 21. Picture cards (Kings, Queens and Jacks) are worth 10 points each, Aces are worth 1 or 11 points and all other cards are worth their face value. If you beat the dealers score you win the hand and get even money, so if you bet $5 you will get $10 back (your $5 stake plus $5 winnings). If you have the same as the dealer you tie the hand and get your stake back. If you are dealt a blackjack (an Ace and any 10) on your first 2 cards you are paid 3to2, so on a $5 bet you will get $12.50 back ($5 stake plus $7.50 winnings) unless the dealer has blackjack in which case it's a tie.
There are also options to Split, Double or take insurance;
- Splitting - If you are dealt 2 cards the same (i.e. 8-8) you have the option of the splitting the cards placing another bet of equal value. you are then dealt another card on each of the original cards and can play each hand as normal
- Doubling - You can choose to double your bet following the initial 2 cards, you are then dealt 1 more card only.
- Insurance - If the dealer is showing an ace you are given the option of taking insurance against them having blackjack. Insurance pays at 2 to 1 if the dealer has blackjack but is lost if they do not.
